We are waiting for her timing to ask Jesus into her life because I want this decision to come from them and not their mom prompting them to make the decision. With Isaac, he wanted to pray, I did not ask him if he was ready, he made the step on his own. I kept Emma out of earshot when Isaac told others about it because I did not want her asking Jesus into her heart because her big brother did. She wants to do ALMOST everything her big brother does and I wanted this decision to come on her own timing not her brothers.
Emma is quite funny and amazing. There are times that I will be trying to get Isaac to answer a question about numbers or something and Emma who is not even sitting with us and will be playing will pop off the answer. It just amazes me sometimes. Thursday I was in the playroom going over math with Isaac. The door between the playroom and house was open and Emma was in the house playing. In a normal voice, I told Isaac we were going to have a toy sale (to get him to understand combining pennies and dimes). Right when I said that, I heard pitter-patter in the house, the door open and close and then the door to the playroom open. Emma comes running in saying I want to have a toy sale too.
Last month Emma had a dentist appointment and I told her the day before we had to go. She got very excited and starting saying, that lady is going to clean my teeth and use that black thing on them and use that thing that tastes like bubble gum and that boy is going to come in and make sure my teeth are clean,... I said, "that boy?" and she said yeah, that boy that comes in to make sure my teeth are clean. She of course meant the dentist. I told the dental hygenist when we were there the next day and she got a kick out of that one. He didn't come in that time but she said she was going to relay the story. I will have to ask him the next time I am in there if he heard the story. It was quite funny! I wonder if they will still love going to the dentist when they get their first cavity (if they get one). Emma even woke up early the day of the dentist because she was so excited about going.
When Isaac had his appointment a few weeks ago, Emma was Miss Jibber Jabber and the lady said she had never heard her talk so much and asked if this was new. I laughed and said no. There are times she will talk non-stop in the car or while eating lunch, you name it. I don't know where she gets it from.
Emma also loves babies, I mean LOVES babies. She tries to pick them up or lead them around or pick them up or drag them around with her or pick them up. It is at times comical to watch her be such a mother but we have to get on to her about being gentle and letting them be.
This next one is an Isaac story mostly but I had to add it because I just thought about it.
We went on vacation in September and saw Huck Finn at an outdoor theater. I had not taught Isaac about slavery yet and he was confused about what was going on in the story. I explained to him a little while watching the show about runaway slaves. The next day he and Emma were playing at my parents house and I heard Isaac say, "I am the runaway slave, Emma". They were playing Huck Finn. When we got back home we talked a little more in length about slavery.
A few Sundays ago after church had finished we were getting ready to leave, I spotted Isaac at the door that leads into the church kitchen. I told him we were getting ready to leave and he said he wanted to talk to Pastor Scott to see how he was doing. Scott was diagnosed in June with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease and the doctors told him he has about 1 1/2 years to live. Since that time, the kids have been praying for Scott and asking the Lord to take the sickness out of his body. I touched me that Isaac wanted to check on him before heading home. I hung back so I could over hear the conversation. When Isaac finally got to speak to him, Scott told him he was doing ok but that he was tired a lot. Scott then told me that Isaac was afraid to shake his hand. We then both told Isaac that he could not catch what Scott had. We always tell our kids not to shake hands when they have a cold so they don't spread the germs so Isaac must have thought he could get what Scott has. Anyway, as we were talking to Scott, Isaac asked how come he was talking funny. Scott's neurons in his tongue and one hand have been affected by the disease and he can no longer hold his guitar pick and his speech is slurred and at times difficult to understand. Scott explained in kid-language about his tongue and showed it to Isaac. Scott had been chewing green gum which made his tongue green and Isaac was taken aback by it not knowing it was from the gum. He asked how come his tongue was green and Scott tried to explain to him but I am not sure Isaac believed him because that night when he was praying for Scott he also prayed for Scott's green tongue.
Back to Emma, last week we were at the Reed's house having a staff meeting and the kids were playing in the other room. Now when we are trying to get our kids attention to stop them from doing something we are saying, "ISAAC GERE" or "EMMA GRACE GERE". Little Caleb, who is almost 5, must have been doing something that Emma disapproved of and we hear coming from the room, "CALEB GERE'. We all started laughing at little Miss Bossy.
